Animation Studio talks about daemons - Thursday, October 18th, 2007

Rhythm and Hues, one of the graphics and animation studios who worked on The Golden Compass talk about creating the daemons. The animators comment on the number of forms that the had to make for pan and how they tried to keep him consistent through them all by adding the dark areas around his eyes. "We've got Pan as a ferret and Pan as a wild cat.. We also have Pan as a mouse and Pan as a seagull. He is also a sparrow. He's a moth.. a baby snow leopard".

Catholic League condemns Golden Compass - Sunday, October 14th, 2007

The Catholic league has stated that an 'attack' is underway on the upcoming movie 'The Golden Compass', they are calling Pullman a "militant athiest" who sells athiesm to children and promotes the denigration of christianity, especially Roman Catholicism.

We'll just have to wait with baited breath to see what this 'attack' will be..

Big names added to Golden Compass Cast - Thursday, October 11th, 2007

There have been a few additions and changes added to the Golden compass cast..

Young actor Freddie Highmore who played charlie in the recent adaptation of Charlie and the chocolate facory is to play the voice of Lyra's daemon Pantalaimon. Top actress Kristin Scott Thomas will voice Lord Asriel's snow leopard daemon Stelmaria, and Kathy Bates will be the voice of Lee Scorsby's Hare daemon Hester.

It has also been revealed that British actor Sir Ian McKellen who played Gandalf in New Line's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy will voice armoured bear Iorek Byrnison, a change to the original casting of Nonso Anozie.

New Golden Compass Trailer Debut - Thursday, October 11th, 2007

The Golden Compass Trailer debuted Today at an event in New York City’s Rockefeller Center, hosted by actor Sam Elliott who plays Lee Scoresby in the movie. The trailer has some great new clips of the bears.

Final 3 chapters of book cut from GC - Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Chris Weitz has revealed that the final 3 chapters of the Golden compass/Northern Lights have been moved to the second film 'The subtle knife' to provide "the most promising conclusion to the first film and the best possible beginning to the second."

Author of the books Philip Pullman has publicly supported the changes, stating that "every film has to make changes to the story that the original book tells - not to change the outcome, but to make it fit the dimensions and the medium of film."

We'll just have to wait and see until 7th December..

New Defining Daemons Featurette - Monday, October 1st, 2007

New Line Cinema have released a 5 minute featurette entitled “Defining Daemons” which has some great new footage of daemons. In the video Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, Director Chris Weitz and others talk about daemons. There is also some behind the scenes footage of daemons being created.

Golden Compass Game Developer Diary - Friday, September 28th, 2007

A developer working on the Golden Compass Game talks about being bringing the game world to life. Sean O'Daniels worked on art for the game and in his diary talks about how hard it was to create the game and imagine how Lyra saw her world.

The developer also talks about how he "enjoyed being immersed in Lyra's world" and that he is "a complete fan".

Animation completed for Golden Compass - Sunday, September 16th, 2007

One of the character animators working on The Golden Compass movie has reported that the animation for the film is now complete. There will be a sneak preview of The Golden Compass at at an event for New Line Cinema's 40th birthday as part of The New York Film Festival.

Golden Compass set to hit Box Office BIG - Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Director Chris Weitz and stars Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott and Eva Green are hoping the compass points upward for box office receipts and sequels.

The studio has enough faith to make Craig and Kidman commit for movies two and three. "There is a huge history with these books and so many stories," Craig marvels. "I've read all the books and there has been nothing better than relaxing in my trailer reading all of them. I didn't want to miss a trick because I knew this project could be that good."

Golden Compass still attacks Religion - Monday, September 10th, 2007

In a recent interview in 'Entertainment Weekly' with Nicole Kidman who plays Mrs Coulter, the actress confirms that the staple religion in the film is being called "the Magisterium", with no reference to a particular sect, as opposed to scrapping all relgious references, which was initally suggested.

New Golden Compass Stills! - Saturday, September 1st, 2007

New Golden Compass stills with finished CGI elements have been released. The stills show Lyra and Roger with their daemons, Lord Asriel in front of the northern lights, Iorek and Ragnar Sturlusson (Iofur Raknison).

Fate of New Line Hangs on GC Movie - Friday, August 31st, 2007

In an article The New York Times have reported how the fate of New Line Cinema rests on the sucess of The Golden Compass. The movie wich is "the most expensive the studio has ever made", has a budget of $180 million. The film was so expensive to make "due in large part to the business of the daemons".

New Line’s production president said that "If the film is a disaster, he added, the company’s prospects would likely darken", however, if the film is a huge hit it would mean sucess for New Line.

Interview with GC Game Developer - Thursday, August 30th, 2007

In an Interview from Wired the developer of the Golden Compass Videogame, Dax Berg, talks about the difficulties in making a licensed game. The game developer is also questioned about how The Golden Compass has been translated from the book and when asked which elements are kept from the book and movie Dax mentions "battling bears, flying witches and attacking Zeppelins to name a few".
